Shams 1: the largest solar plant in concentration of the world

Shams 1 Central ("shams" means Sun in Arabic) was inaugurated in March 2013 in United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is located in a desert region, 120 miles southwest of the capital Abu Dhabi. Extends over an area of 2.5 km square, or the space that would occupy 285 football fields.

The plant is composed of 258,000 hollow mirrors and 768 solar concentrators. Parabolic shape mirrors concentrate the rays of the Sun in an absorbing tube. This tube carries a fluid heat transfer thus warming the Sun more than the 393 c. Absorbent 27,648, developed by the German company Schott, tubes have been designed with a technology that minimizes the loss of heat. Heat exchangers then transfer the heat of refrigerant pipes filled with water. Thus the hot water becomes steam. And this steam turns turbines that generate electricity. The unit is also equipped with cooling system dry, considerably reducing water consumption. Shams 1 represents a strategic investment for the Government of the United Arab Emirates. According to the oil, the Government of the United Arab Emirates seeks to diversify its energy production. It established a total of 7% of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2020. This production is intended for the domestic market, which allows the water to consume less oil and export more. Shams 1 will reduce 175,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year. Its impact on the environment is equal to planting 1.5 million trees. The cost of the project amounts to $600 million and 460 million euros. Total and the Spanish group Abengoa Solar share equal 40% of Central. Masdar, a renewable energy company managed by Emirates, controls the remaining 60%. With this plant of solar energy, Masdar has nearly 68% of the production of renewable energy from the Persian Gulf. The company also owns 10% of global concentration solar production.
